The latest and most exciting development in TEFL

Chance to exploit technology in our students’ pockets – cameras, mobile phones, MP3 players...

Learning English should be fun for students – M-learning is an amazing opportunity to ensure this continues to be the case. Easy way to use technology, and can be (and mainly is) free, easy to use and low tech.

TEACHING GRAMMAR COMMUNICATIVELY

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 12:00am 0 Comments

The goal of grammar instruction is to enable students to carry out their communication purposes. This goal has three implications:

  • Students need overt instruction that connects grammar with larger communication contexts.
  • Students do not need to master every aspect of each grammar point, only those that are relevant to the immediate communication task.
  • Error correction is not always the instructor's first responsibility.…

TEACHING WRITING

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 11:55pm 0 Comments

There have been numerous approaches to the teaching of writing in the history of language teaching. These have evolved with the development of different approaches to teaching in general, which have in turn contributed to the changing role and status of writing within English language syllabuses and the English as a Foreign Language classroom. In spite of other general methodological changes, however, writing continues to be one of the most difficult areas for the teacher and learner…

Can you Faissal share with us a sample of your reading comprehension texts?

I have three jobs related to teaching English. (i) I teach at an Arab high school, called Abu Krainat. (ii) I am the literature program counsellor of Arab schools in the south of Israel. (iii) I offer in-service courses for teaching teaching the literature program. The English language program here mainly focuses on reading comprehension. The new literature program focuses on High Order Thinking Skills through literature. Students read the texts, analyse them, reflect and connect the text to its social and cultural contexts.
